James Carl Young, 90, of North Charleston died Tuesday at his home surrounded by loving family. The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 15 in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 E. Montague Ave., North Charleston. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Stuhr's Funeral Home, 232 Calhoun St., Charleston.
Carl was born September 17, 1921 in Winnsboro, SC to Catherine Eula and Leslie Dixon Young. He graduated from Mt. Zion Institute in Winnsboro. Following time working for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington, D.C., he began his career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard prior to enlisting in the US Army Air Corps. Carl served his country from January 21, 1943 to May 21, 1945, much of that time stationed with the 509th squadron of the 351st bomb group at Polebrook, England from where he flew 28 bombing missions as a B-17 tail gunner.
Following his military service, Carl returned to work at the shipyard where he worked until 1982 as a Shop 31 machinist, lead machinist, apprentice school instructor and mechanical engineering technician. Upon retirement from CNS, he worked for several years as a mechanical engineering technician with US Navy contractors.
Carl married Lydia Lucas Grimsley in February, 1947 in Florence, SC, and they settled in North Charleston where they were active in church and community affairs for many years. Carl was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church for over 60 years, serving on the vestry as junior and senior wardens. He received the Haskins Award for service and dedication to the church. Carl was a member of the North Charleston Jaycees (secretary and president); 60-year master mason of Chicora Masonic Lodge #366; Cubmaster and troop committee member with the Boy Scouts of America; member of VFW Post 5091 (chaplain); member of Charleston Elks Club (veterans committee); member of the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (chaplain and historian); member of the Charleston Historical Railroad Society and member of the Travelers Protective Association.
Surviving are sons James C. (Jim) Young, Jr. (Elaine) of Clover, Alex Young (Anne) of Lexington and John L. Young (Phil) of Charleston; daughters Anne DuBois of Charleston, Cathy Sligh (Richard) of N. Augusta and Mary McElveen (Jim) of Vienna, VA; grandchildren Will Young, Jay Young (Courtney), Lucas Young (Ashley), Alex Young, Lucy Young, Jack Young, Mary Belding, David Sligh (Kathryn), Darby Sligh and Ryan McElveen; great-grandchildren Lydia Ann Young, Mary Miller Young and Addison Darby Young and sisters Rosa Shaw and Emma Lee Clark of Columbia. Carl was predeceased by his wife, Lydia, 3 brothers and one sister.
