James K. Withington, Sr.

January 14, 1923 — February 4, 2014

James K. "Barney" Withington, Sr, 91, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Claudia Richardson Withington, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, February 4, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 in St. John's Parish Church, at 2:00 pm. Interment, St. John's Parish Churchyard with military honors. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 GLENN MCCONNELL PARKWAY.

James was born January 14, 1923 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late William Joseph Withington and Julia McDonald Bell Withington. He was a retired Sales Manager with Dixie Furniture and was a member of St. John's Parish Church. James was a US Army veteran and served during WWII. He was with the 30th Division and went ashore at Omaha Beach on June 8, 1944 (2 days after D-Day). He fought in the breakout at St. Lo in Normandy, through France, to the town of Aachen in Germany. He was then assigned to the 99th Division in the Ardenne forest. They were on the line only a short time when they were embroiled in the Battle of the Bulge. In early 1945, he crossed The Bridge at Remagen. He helped liberate one of the concentration camps just prior to being sent home.

He is survived by his children: James K. "Jay" Withington, Jr.(Paulette) of Charleston, SC, Brenda R. Withington (Bob) of Phoenix, AZ, R. Allen Withington (Sharlett) of Cottageville, SC and Vicki W. Eslick (Roger) of Cottageville, SC. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 9 great great-grandchildren. Mr. Withington is preceded in death by his sisters and brother, Catherine Withington, Dorothy Davey and William Joseph Withington.
