Listen to Obituary

James R. Williams, Sr., 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 1:40 a.m. at Brandon Oaks Memory Care in Roanoke, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family. Known affectionately as “Dad,” “Grandad,” and “Jimmy” by those who cherished him, he was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on December 31, 1942, to Jonathan Finley Williams and Edith Fink Williams. Jimmy was an only child who did not meet his father until the age of five, when Finley returned from service in World War II. He often said that his greatest achievement was raising a large family, proving that God can indeed multiply great things from a single seed.

On July 27, 1962, Jimmy married the love of his life, Helen Joyce Brown, beginning a lifelong adventure that grew strong roots in South Carolina while reaching around the world. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, fortunate enough to be stationed in his hometown of Charleston. Following his service, he worked in a variety of roles-from the shipyard to repairing pinball machines-before building a long career with the U.S. State Department, retiring in 1997. Known for his ability to fix almost anything, his skills blessed countless people and companies over the years.

In retirement, Jimmy devoted his time to serving his church, community, and family. He never met a stranger and freely shared the hope of Jesus Christ with anyone willing to listen. His generosity extended to those in need both at home and abroad. He helped establish Boy Scout troops in Africa and Greece, planted churches in several countries, and left a ministry legacy that continues to bear fruit today. Above all, his greatest love beyond his family was his love for Jesus Christ, and that love shaped everything he did.

Jimmy is survived by his children: Rev. James Rhon Williams, Jr. (Kathy) of Roanoke, Virginia, and their daughters Katie Williams, Rebecca Alley (Jesse), Jennifer Williams, and Abigail Williams (Jesse Brinkley); Joyce Elaine Stephenson (Edward) of Argyle, Texas, and their children Lawrence Schuster (Megan) and Joyce Fouad (Youseff); MGySgt (Ret.) Jonathan Ransom Williams (Shawn) of Albany, Georgia, and their son J.R. Williams; and Dr. Joseph Randal Williams (Cassie) of Henrico, Virginia, and their children Joseph Williams, Jessica Williams, Jimmy Williams, and John Williams. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Kate Alley, Eli Alley, Emma Alley, Annabelle Alley, Liam Brinkley, Etta Schuster, Rory Godbey, and Atticus Godbey.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Joyce Williams; his parents, Edith and Finley Williams; and a great-grandchild, Riley Brinkley.

Jimmy’s family celebrates his faith, his love, and the enduring example he set. His life was a testimony to the truth that from a single seed, God can grow a legacy that touches generations and nations.
