James Lee Wheeler

James Lee Wheeler, 75, of Charleston, SC, husband of Carolyn Hobgood Wheeler, died June 4, 2017, at his home surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 7th at Citadel Square Baptist Church, 328 Meeting Street at 12:00 p.m. The family will greet friends inside the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery.

Jimmy was born in Charleston on December 24, 1941, son of Richard Eugene and Katie Smoak Wheeler. He considered his childhood adventures downtown around Colonial Lake and Hampton Park to be idyllic, and he held lifelong friends and cherished memories from that time. A graduate of Rivers High School, he worked at Lockheed Georgia Company and in industrial and electrical supply.

Jimmy and Carolyn moved to James Island in the mid-1970s where he served as a volunteer fireman with the James Island Fire Department for many years. An active member of the Sons of the Confederacy, he enjoyed studying the history of that period. Jimmy was a member of the James Island Yacht Club and a member of Ft. Johnson Baptist Church.

Jimmy is survived by his wife of 44 years; sisters Daphne W. Stephens and Edith W. Doyle, both of Charleston; brothers-in-law James Ross Hobgood (Shirley), Harold Hobgood (Ginny), and Larry Hobgood (Marilyn), all of Georgia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Jimmy was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy W. Burnette Powers and Betty W. Anderson, and brother, Richard E. Wheeler.

Jimmy lived his life honorably and responsibly and made time for family, friends, boating, shrimping, oyster roasts, model trains, genealogical research, all things Charleston, and his National Champion Clemson Tigers. He was much loved and much admired - and has left us much too soon.
