James Carlisle Thigpen, 87, of Hanahan, SC, husband of Martha Janet Byrd Thigpen entered into eternal rest Thursday, August 16, 2018. His funeral service will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1444 Remount Road at 4:30 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held Sunday, August 19, 2018 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2236 Bethlehem Road, Hartsville, SC, 29550 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel.
Carlisle was born February 23, 1931 in Clarendon County, one of 10 children of the late Jim E. Thigpen and the late Lillie Green Thigpen. A graduate of Hebron High School, he served in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked in the wood accounting department at Mead Westvaco for more than 40 years. Carlisle was an active member for nearly 60 years at Aldersgate United Methodist Church and also was a member of the Hammerton Masonic Lodge #332.
He is survived by his wife, of 60 years, Janet Thigpen of Hanahan, SC; son, Jim Thigpen (Dawn) of Johnson City, TN; daughter, Sydney Mellard (David) of Lawrenceville, GA; brother, Julius Thigpen and sister JoAnn Holladay (JV); grandchildren: Caroline M. Clark (Spencer), Meredith M. Hawks (Ryan), Owen Thigpen (Brittany), Matthew Thigpen and Hannah Thigpen; many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by three brothers: Jesse Thigpen, Clarence Thigpen, Mervin Thigpen and four sisters: Letha Welch, Aline McKenzie, Juanita Welch, Elizabeth Camp.
