James “Jimmy” Hampden Small, Jr., 74, of Goat Island, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 15, 2026. Born on October 22, 1951, in Charleston, South Carolina, Jimmy was the beloved son of the late James Hampden Small, Sr., and the late Susie Schleppegrell Small Detyens.

A devoted handyman by trade, Jimmy was known for his remarkable woodworking talents and his great sense of humor, qualities that endeared him to those fortunate enough to know him. Jimmy carried with him a deep love for the lowcountry life, particularly the water, where he enjoyed fishing and shrimping-the very essence of his coastal roots. He held a cherished place in the hearts of his community on Goat Island, affectionately earning the unofficial title of the “mayor” due to his warm spirit and presence.

Jimmy’s affinity for athleticism was evident during his years as a student at the University of South Carolina, where he graduated in 1973. A proud member of the university’s track team, he once held the distinguished title of the fastest runner in South Carolina, an achievement that highlighted his dedication and determination.

He is survived by his devoted daughter, Emma Small of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who was the light of his life; and his beloved partner of many years, Tami Keel. Jimmy also leaves behind his sister, Suzanne Walter of Tampa, Florida.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James Hampden Small, Sr., Susie Small Detyens, and his sister, Marilyn Vierra.
