James Joseph Scott

James Joseph Scott, Jr., passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Bishop Gadsden on February 5th, 2011.  Mr. Scott was born May 4th 1929 in Charleston, S.C., the son of the late James Joseph Scott and Alma Osteen Scott.  He graduated from Charleston High School, The Citadel Class of 1948 and received his Masters in Engineering from Cornell University in 1949. He was predeceased by his elder son, James Joseph Scott, III.



 

After serving as a Company Commander in The U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict, his civilian career began in Jacksonville, Florida where he met and married the former Betty Nell Young.  Returning to Charleston, he worked for many years at the SC State Ports Authority as Chief Engineer and the Director of Engineering.  He continued his career as the Executive Director of The Port of Jacksonville Fl., The Port of Jebel Ali in Dubai U.A.E., and The North Carolina Ports in Wilmington, N.C., where he retired in 1996.



 


He is survived by his wife Betty Young Scott of Charleston; his son Robert Young Scott and his wife Ruth of Charleston; his daughter Anne Scott Wallace and her husband Dr. Scott Wallace of Charlotte N.C.; his daughter- in law Susan Ashley Scott Martindale of Georgetown, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild.



 


There will be a private graveside service.  A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, February 9th at 2 PM at The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden.  There will be a reception at Bishop Gadsden following the service.



 


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Resident's Assistance Fund.
