Entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 29, 2012, James Hugh Sammons, Sr., 74, husband of Camber Able Sammons of Charleston, SC. The friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Sammons are invited to attend his funeral services on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 12:00 noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1519 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 2, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
Born on February 5, 1938 in Vidalia, Georgia, Hugh was the son of the late Franklin Clyde Sammons and the late Alberta Garrett Sammons of Savannah, Georgia. At age 16, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserves and served for eight years. He retired from management at Eastman Chemical Company in Columbia, SC. He served in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including Bishop of the West Columbia Second Ward, on the High Council in both the Columbia and the Charleston Stakes, and also served as Branch President of the Denmark Branch. He was an enthusiastic sports lover who enjoyed golfing with his friends. He coached football in his younger years and was a loyal Gamecock fan.
Survivors include his wife, Camber Able Sammons; two sons, J. Hugh Sammons, Jr. (Stephanie) of Gilbert, Arizona and Justin Franklin Sammons (Shayleen) of Columbia, SC; four daughters, Brenda Millgate (Terry) of Uinta, Utah, Linda Giler (Paul) of Charlotte, NC, Glenda Gantt (Dennis) of Allen, Texas, and Sharon Child (Shane) of Denton, Texas; one brother, Franklin Clyde Sammons, Sr. (Mel) of Sarasota, Fl; two stepsons, Thomas Able Fulmer (Christy) and Robert Turner Fulmer of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Marissa Millgate, Brandon Gantt, Sarah Nelson, Genevieve Gantt, Chase Giler, Sophia Giler, Hayden Giler, Blake Giler, James Hugh Sammons III, Paul Sammons, Tatum Sammons, Phillip Sammons, Matthew Child, Madison Child, Preston Child, Austin Child, Spencer Child, Hannah Sammons, and Avery Sammons; and one step granddaughter, Amber Claire Fulmer.
