James Elbert Proctor Sr. (“Pepaw”)

It is with love and remembrance that we announce the passing of James Elbert Proctor Sr., affectionately known to all as Pepaw, on September 8, 2025.

Born with a spirit of resilience and resourcefulness, James dedicated over 45 years of his life to the Post and Courier, where his hard work and loyalty left a lasting mark. Known as a jack of all trades, he had a gift for fixing whatever life placed before him. As his family often said, if something went wrong, it wasn’t broken - the timing was just off.

James was blessed with great love in his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Della, who stood by him with devotion and care. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Proctor, with whom he shared many cherished years and memories.

Pepaw’s true legacy, however, lives in the family he loved so dearly. He is survived by his sons Jimmy (and daughter-in-law Karen), Marty, and Tony (and daughter-in-law Vicki); his daughter Susan (and daughter-in-law Bebe) and his daughter Sandy Davis; his grandchildren Brandy, Gary, Jimmy, Elisha, Jamie, and Shirley; and his great-grandchildren Gary, Bryant, and Robbie. Each one carries his humor, wisdom, and unwavering love in their hearts.

Pepaw filled holidays and everyday moments with laughter and tradition. As the family fondly recalls, “Don’t worry - this Easter, we’ll hide our own eggs.” His presence was a cornerstone of family life, and his absence will be felt deeply, yet his memory will continue to guide and comfort all who knew him.

A celebration of James’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor the man who meant so much to so many.
