James Garner Patey, 93, retired naval architect from Charleston Naval Shipyard, former manager of the St. Andrews PSD, author and genealogist, entered into eternal rest, Wednesday, July 31, 2013. His funeral service will be held in J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, Sunday, August 4, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel. James was born November 14, 1919 in Houston County, TN, son of James Stokes Patey and Bessie Maye Skelton Patey. He was an engineering graduate of Tennessee Tech and was a member of the varsity baseball team and track teams. James was a past member of National Association Naval Supervisors; West Charleston Sertoma (Life Member); Charleston Historical Society; Gibbs Museum of Art; Toastmasters; Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Scottish Society of Charleston. He was a member of the French Protestant Huguenot Church of Charleston.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn Whaley Patey and his second wife, Bess Gready Patey and a grand daughter, Michelle C. Burkart.
Surviving are his daughters, Carolyn P. Welch (Mac) of Anderson, SC and Marjorie P. Burkart (Michael) of Johns Island, SC; step-son, Dr. Richard G. Fessler (Ann) of Greenville, SC; brother, Robert N. Patey (Susan) of Hendersonville, TN; grandchildren, W. Christopher Welch (Emily), Meridith W. Blair, Jennifer A. Crosby (Brian), Daniel G., Mark P., Matthew A., and Stephen A. Fessler; Great-grandchildren; Katherine and Ian Welch; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ethel G. Bonner; nieces, Roberta Willis (Richard) of Cumming, GA, Patrecia Zebrowski (John) of Cumberland, RI and Camellia Patey of Buffalo Grove, IL.
