James McFadden "Max" Oliver, Jr., 90, known as PaPa, of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, husband of the late Yvonne Hackett Oliver, entered into eternal rest Monday, March 23, 2015. A Gathering of Friends will be held Sunday, March 29, 2015 at the home of Dee and Dianne Oliver, 3923 Willow Pointe Lane, Johns Island, SC from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Max was born June 18, 1924 in Charleston, SC to James M. Oliver, Sr. and Tillie Brice Oliver. He attended local schools, joined the U. S. Navy SeaBees while serving his apprenticeship at Charleston Naval Ship Yard. His tour of duty included several of the major invasions of the South Pacific. He returned to Charleston and was discharged in February 1946. He and Yvonne were married in January 1946 in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of which Max was a charter member. Max went to work at Coburg Dairy where he worked for many years as garage foreman. He returned to Civil Service at the Polaris Missile Facility in Charleston SC where he retired in 1986. Max joined Union Kilwinning Masonic Lodge in 1955 and served as Master of Lodge in 1970.
Max and Yvonne are survived by five children, Davis "Dee" M. Oliver and Dianne Thomas, Mary Barbara "Babs" and Marshal S. "Pete" Ambrose, Vivian Lynette "Lynn" Oliver and Ken Holland, Jaye Crile and Leslie A. Dane, Jr., Becky Brice and Andy Stallworth; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and his sister, Tillie Oliver Roe, of Hendersonville, NC.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, William Brice Oliver.
