Col. James I. Muir Jr., age 95, of The Seabrook at Hilton Head, South Carolina died August 6, 2012 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late General and Mrs. James I. Muir of Easton, Maryland. He was born December 29, 1916 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California. He attended high school in Savannah, Georgia and at Punahou in Honolulu, Hawaii. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1939, the fourth straight generation to graduate from West Point.
Col. Muir served in Panama, China-Burma-India with Lord Louis Mountbatten's Headquarters in Ceylon and with Merrill's Marauders in Burma, in Trieste, Italy, Vietnam, Hawaii and served a total of eight years in the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations in the Pentagon.
Jim and his wife, Lucile, moved permanently to Hilton Head in 1970. He worked for Al Gerth, a builder, building custom homes. After five years he became CEO and President of Ship Shape, a company to repair and improve houses. He was active with the Bargain Box, All Saints Church and St. Luke's Church. He was also active in several programs at The Seabrook.
Col. Muir is survived by his wife, Constance Clark Muir, of Hilton Head, his daughter, Mikelle Carr (Ken) of Maine, his two sons, James Irvin Muir, III (Ann) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Charles Henry Muir II (Barbara) of Mt. Pleasant, SC. His grandchildren are Kate Darby, Jean Wall, Jason Kennedy, James I. Muir, IV and Grace Muir. He has six great-grandchildren: Hamer and Canham Darby, Lucie and Kathleen Wall and Skyler and Wren Muir.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 8 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at 533 Pelzer Drive, Mt. Pleasant.
A memorial service will be held Friday, August 10 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Church with a reception to follow at The Seabrook. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Research.
He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date with his first wife, Lucile, his father, grandfather and grandmother.
