James Lawrence, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Renée M. Lawrence, entered into eternal rest Thursday, November 18, 2021. His funeral service will be held graveside Wednesday, November 24, 2021 in Saint James Churchyard, 1872 Camp Road Charleston at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

James was born August 19, 1934 in Washington, Rhode Island, son of the late Charles Nelson Lawrence and Vivian Jenison Lawrence. He served in the US Navy from 1953 - 1965, attained the rank of Opticalman Class "A." While on the USS Proteus, he earned a Citation for "exceptionally meritorious service" and a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was a retired optical instrument technician with the Charleston Naval Shipyard. James was a national certified fencing instructor as well as an Eagle Scout. He was an avid painter and member of the Charleston Artist Guild. In addition, he was a member of the Elks Club, VFW and American Legion.

James is survived by his daughter, Lori Ann Lawrence Polk of Round O, SC; granddaughter, Mollie Ann Butler; and beloved friend, Marjorie Ray.
