J. Everett Jones, 81, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Doris Lynch Jones died Sunday, November 20, 2016. His Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 25, 2016 in the All Saints Lutheran Church, 2107 Highway 17 N at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 22, 2016 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Everett was born July 10, 1935 in Smoaks, South Carolina. He grew up in North Charleston and graduated from Chicora High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army Reserve and Active Duty for 8 years. Everette was the retired Vice President of South Coast Bank. In 1964 he was elected President of the North Charleston Jaycees, later served as Regional Vice President and National Director of the S.C. Jaycees. While a member of the Jaycees, he received the highest honor given to a Jaycee member. He was awarded JCI Senatorship #8883. In 1971 he began a radio broadcasting experience that lasted for over 26 years. He was the play by play announcer for high school football and basketball in the lowcountry. In the mid seventies he was the co-anchor of the football scoreboard show on WOKE Radio with the late Harry Weaver. During the early nineties his son Jay worked with him while broadcasting Wando football for 3 years as his color commentator, which was a special memory for him. He loved all sports but his favorite was football. He was an avid Gamecock fan, especially attending games with his great friend Randy Jones.
From 1988 to 1992 he served on Mount Pleasant Town Council and has since then served on various committees of council. He is a member and former board chairman of All Saints Lutheran Church in Mount Pleasant. He regularly served as assisting minister or Communion Assistant. He loved to travel with his wife Doris. They visited Italy, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Bermuda, Aruba, Vegas, San Francisco and enjoyed many cruise ship vacations. He was a former president of the non profit Friends of Santa, Inc.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sons, Jay Jones (Cindy) of Norfolk, VA and Carey Jones of North Charleston, SC; six grandchildren, Danny Jones, Tyler Jones, Matt Jones, Kyle Jones, Ryan Jones and Tracy Schoenfeld (Ben); step-daughter, Doris Ann Driggers (Steve) of Summerville, SC; two step grandchildren, Hallie and Chana Driggers and one great granddaughter, McKensie Skai Jones.
