James Alexander Matthews, Sr., 81, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Dorothy deBeaumont Matthews died Monday, July 11, 2016. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 18, 2016 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 6:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Jim was born August 10, 1934 in Hemingway, South Carolina, son of the late Earl Junious Matthews and the late Grace Miriam Hill Matthews. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and served in the U.S. Army. Jim was a retired controller with the Beach Company and was a Mason. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant.
He is survived by his children, Margaret M. Wichmann (Karl), James Alexander "Alex" Matthews, Jr., and Dorothy Jeanne Thornton (William); grandchildren, Kathryn Matthews, James Matthews III, Laura Elliott, Erich Wichmann, and Jamie Thornton; three great-grandchildren, Bishop, Aiden, and Desmond; sisters, Miriam Fawcett, Janie Belle Mathis, and Linda Roe; and brother, Jerry Matthews.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he was predeceased by a son, Charles Glenn Matthews, and his siblings, Charlie, Olive, Ulmer, Tom, John, Mary Ellen, and Larry.
