James E. Hughes III peacefully passed on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the age of 80 in Huger, SC.
James (Jamie) was born on September 7, 1944, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to the late James E. Hughes Jr. and the late Marian F. Newbergh Hughes. After high school graduation, Jamie attended the University of Massachusetts. Jamie joined the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam. When discharged, he returned to live and work in Fairfax County, VA. Through family friends, he met his wife, Susan Speer Hughes, and they married. Jamie spent his entire career in communications beginning with Bell Atlantic and retiring as a supervisor with Verizon in 2009. In 2024, Jamie and Susan relocated from Vienna, VA to Huger, SC to be closer to family.
Jamie enjoyed sports, especially tennis, baseball and golf. During any televised match, game or round Jamie could be found cheering his favorite team or players with his favorite beverage, a RC Cola. He was an avid tennis player during his day and a Member of Oakton Glen Tennis Club which he assisted in running. His favorite baseball team became the local Washington Nationals. His other passion in life was the world of technology and he could always be counted on to help family members with his knowledge and skills. His technology collection included the latest and greatest of all the most recent products.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Susan Hughes, he is survived by two siblings, Susan Gilligan of Scarborough, Maine and Mimi Hughes of Salem Massachusetts; nephew, Mathew Gilligan (Melanie); great niece, Elise Gilligan; and great nephew, Colin Gilligan.
He is also survived by: sister-in-law, Gretchen Speer (Albert) Anderson of Mt Pleasant SC; brother-in-law, Brian Speer (Connie) of Morrisville NC; nieces, Kelly Speer-Marchese (William) and Kimberly A. Maldonado (Marlon); nephews, Kirk Speer (Natalie) and Brian Anderson (Kelly); and also five great-nieces, three great-nephews, and extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Marsha Hughes Moran, and his brother-in-law Lindsey Speer.
A private service will be held at the family’s request.
