Dr. James Singleton Howell, 88, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Louise Harp Howell entered into eternal rest Tuesday, December 10, 2013. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 in Grace on the Ashley Baptist Church, 2014 Bees Ferry Road at 11:00 am. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 12, 2013, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.
James was born January 13, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late James Singleton Howell, Sr. and Marie Allen Howell. James served in the US Army in WWII. He graduated from The College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a General Practitioner of Medicine in Charleston for 50 years.
He was a Lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Charleston, also a member of Grace on the Ashley Baptist Church. He was an avid nature photographer, exhibited with Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Harp Howell of Charleston, SC and his former wife Margaret Jones Howell; five daughters, Duchess Howell Raehm (Bob) of Bluffton, SC, Lisa Howell of Southeast, Asia, Lane Howell MacAvoy (christopher)of McLean, VA, and Kathryn M. Howell of Charleston, SC; Esther Uncapher (Ray) Summerville, SC; three sons, James S. Howell, III of Greenville, SC, Larry Burke, Jr and Richard Burke of Charleston, SC ten grandchildren, Jacob Raehn, Matthew Raehm, Luke Raehm, Margaret MacAvoy, Ross MacAvoy, Kit MacAvoy, Daniel Howell,Jonathan Howell and Haley Howell, Bryan Burke, Mason Burke and one great-granddaughter Isabella Burke, and numerous of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Grace on the Ashley Baptist Church, 2014 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston SC 29414.
