James M. Hillard, 91, husband of Louise Winzenried Hillard of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Monday, March 26, 2012, at the Hospice of Charleston, surrounded by his wife and sons. Jim was smiling in his last hours as he did every day of his life. The relatives and friends of James Hillard are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Rodenberg Chapel at Franke at Seaside at 10:30 am. Burial will be private. The family will received friends at the chapel immediately following the service. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Jim was born September 27, 1920 in Nortonville, Kentucky, son of the late Cornelius Hillard and Leona Hicks Hillard. He graduated from Ohio University and received his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois. Jim served in the US Army during World War II in Europe. He was the Associate Librarian at West Point before coming to the Citadel to oversee the construction of the Daniel Library. He retired as the Director of Library Services, and was the author of three books on Library Science. Jim penned articles in Civil War Times, Library Journal and other periodicals. During the many years of marriage, Jim and his wife Louise traveled extensively and visited over 50 countries.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Louise W. Hillard of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sons, Randy Hillard, MD of Williamston, MI and Jerry Hillard of Winterset, IA; and three grandchildren, Elena, Nat and Ian Hillard.
