James Walker Hawkins

James Walker Hawkins, 85, of West Ashley, SC, husband of the late Lee Jamison Hawkins, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at his residence. A graveside service of prayer will be held Friday, January 4, 2019 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road at 11:00 am. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Jim was born November 19, 1933 in Florence, SC, son of the late John Henry Hawkins and Sada Tyner Hawkins Hutto and the late Jack Hutto. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1955 and was a combat veteran of the Korean War in which he received the Bronze Star. After the war he attended the University of South Carolina where he studied chemistry and went on to become an employee at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in the Electronic Engineering Division. After his retirement he worked for Tiger Lily Florist, volunteered with the Crisis Hot Line and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge - the Sea Turtle Recovery Program. While there, Jim contributed 10,000 hours of volunteer service to the refuge as well as mentoring numerous volunteers and interns in the Sea Turtle Recovery efforts!
Surviving are his brother, John L. Hutto (Janice) of Holly Hill, SC and his children; Sonya Hawkins (Sean) of Edisto Island, SC, Lori A. Hawkins (Scott) of Charleston, SC, James M. Hawkins of Charlottesville, VA, Candace J. Cooper (John) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Diana L. Jamison of Kilmarnock, VA and Dancing Eagle of Santa Fe, NM; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Hawkins; his second wife, Lee Jamison Hawkins, his sister Ann Wiles and his brother Roy Hutto.
The family would like to thank his caregivers from Be Well and Hospice of Charleston.
