James Edward "Jim" Hatcher, 77, of North Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Wednesday October 12, 2022. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Barbara Jeanette Hatchell Hatcher, who he lovingly called "Jean"; son, Mark Edward Hatcher (Sheila) of Summerville, SC; daughter, Sally Miller Hatcher of Safety Harbor, FL; brother, Robert Cary Hatcher of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Ashley Nichole Hatcher (Matthew), Shawn Michael Hatcher, Lauren Lee Benefield (Stephen); and great-grandchildren, Skyla, Sophia, Layla, Maximus, Roy, and Reese. He was affectionately known as Papa Jim to all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim was born January 14, 1945 in Newport News, Virginia. He was the son of the late John Richard Hatcher and Nellie Miller Hatcher. He entered the apprenticeship program at the Charleston Naval Shipyard following high school and was later drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps. Jim served in the Marine Corps for four years during the Vietnam War. He returned to the Charleston Naval Shipyard and retired as a Nuclear Engineer. Jim enjoyed his travels to Spain and Scotland and he also loved researching family history and attending family reunions. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #369, Cherokee Place United Methodist Church and a current member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 17, 2022 at J. Henry Stuhr Downtown Chapel from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 273 Meeting Street, at 1:00pm. Interment services will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Florence, SC at 1:00pm.
Jim enjoyed donating to various charities so in lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to any charity of your choice.
