July 9, 1928 — January 11, 2021

James Charles Goss, 92, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Helen "Jo" Carter Goss entered into eternal rest Monday, January 11, 2021. His graveside service will be held Friday, January 15, 2021 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Charlie was born July 9, 1928 in Gadsden, Alabama, son of the late Pierce Jackson Goss and the late Ruby Fletcher Goss. He attended Auburn University on a ROTC scholarship and served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a manager of Woolworth stores before beginning his civil service career at Langley Air Force Base in VA. He moved to the Charleston to work at the Naval Supply Center where he retired as Inventory Director. During his career Charlie created a progressive program known as the "Mom Squad". It enabled mothers to remain in the workforce during school time.

Charlie was a man of many talents and a lifelong learner. When he decided to pursue a hobby, he would master it and then start a new interest. He enjoyed photography and served as president of the Charleston Photography Club. Through his oil painting he captured the beauty of Lowcountry scenes including Shem Creek and the Cooper River Bridge. He rebuilt Porsche and VW car engines and built more than one addition to his home. After a flying lesson on his 70th birthday, he became a pilot and bought an airplane. Charlie loved the water and helped his friend, a yacht broker, sail many yachts up and down the coast. He also volunteered many years as a youth baseball coach and Boy Scout leader East of the Cooper. When he was not growing his garden produce he enjoyed collecting hot trains and coins along with studying the German language.

Most important to Charlie was his family, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be forever missed by his wife of 70 years, Jo; two sons, Charles Michael Goss (Zann) of Headland, AL and Alex Lindsay Goss (Terry) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter, Susan Collins Carnell (Marty) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Gene Goss.
