James Bethea Galloway, Jr., affectionately known as “Jimmy,” sailed into his next great adventure at the age of 77 on October 1, 2024. Born in Sumter, SC on July 24, 1947, Jimmy made Charleston, SC his home—a city he loved.
Jimmy was the son of the late James Bethea Galloway, Sr. (Jim) and Mary Free Galloway (Mary). His brother David also preceded him in death, but his presence lives on through his surviving siblings: his sister, Mary Ann Galloway (“Mag”) of Columbia, SC; his brother, Lewis Free Galloway (wife Bunny Alexander) of Black Mountain, NC; and his youngest brother, Richard Knight Galloway of Charleston, SC. Jimmy was the proud uncle of six nephews, three nieces, one great-niece, and two great-nephews.
After graduating from Dreher High School in Columbia, Jimmy answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy. For three years, he proudly wore his uniform, navigating not only the seas but also the camaraderie and discipline that would shape the rest of his life. He cherished his time in the Navy and often shared stories of his service with a grin that told you he was equally proud and amused by his adventures.
Jimmy’s love for the water was unparalleled. He was a seasoned yachtsman, a former Commodore of the Charleston Yacht Club, and, in his younger years, a sailing instructor at Lake Wateree—where he inspired many to embrace the sport he loved so dearly. His passion for yachting was so intense that he decided to make his home right on the water, living on his cherished boat, Yacht Kindred, for over 30 years.
Known for his easy, infectious smile and his knack for getting into just the right amount of mischief, Jimmy embodied the spirit of adventure. His friends will tell you he was always ready to lend a hand, share a story, or offer a piece of advice.
A Visitation will be held on October 15, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 9:00 to 11:00 am. His burial will also be held on October 15, at 2:00 at the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street in Beaufort. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Charleston Community Sailing Program.
Jimmy’s legacy of friendship, loyalty, and helping others continues to ripple through the waters of Charleston. His light continues to shine through the many lives he touched.
