James Gardiner Dodd, 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Christina Sample Dodd and father of Catherine Gardiner Dodd, passed away at home on Sunday, February 25, 2024. A celebration of life amongst close friends and family will be held in the coming weeks.
Gardiner was born July 10, 1940 in New York, New York, son of James Wood Dodd and Francis Leila Storm. He was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut and graduated top of his class from The Choate School. Gardiner specialized in United States History and Political Science, obtaining his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his Master’s Degree from Wesleyan University, with highest honors from both. His passion was education. He was a history teacher before finding his calling as a Headmaster. Gardiner was Headmaster at King School in Stamford, CT, followed by The O’Neal School in Pinehurst, NC, and concluded his career as Associate Headmaster at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, SC. In addition to his work, he loved spending time with his family, traveling internationally, playing tennis and golf, following multiple sports, and keeping apprised of current events.
Along with his wife of 37 years, Gardiner is survived by his daughter, Catherine Gardiner Dodd and brother, Robert Wood Dodd.
