James was born on April 21, 1921 in Awendaw, South Carolina, son of the late Osborne "Ozzie" Denney and the late Mabel Jackson Denney. From the creeks of Awendaw where he gathered oysters as a boy to his first job on the boats, to his service in World War II to the biggest container ships in the Charleston Harbor. Captain Buster Denney was an above board, outstanding individual and dedicated to his God, his wife and his family. He was the most intelligent man that we ever knew. Buster was a woodworker and a dedicated musician to his church, with his talent on the guitar and a Master Knot Maker. He was respected by his peers and loved by all that knew him. Buster was the lead pilot that put the USS Yorktown where it rests today and served the Charleston Harbor in that capacity for over forty years. He had no time for lazy people and always said, "Be Who You Are", don't try to be something you're not. One of the most profound things that we heard him say was "Nice clothes and cars make you nothing, it's the man inside that counts", as he pointed at his heart. If there had been more Captain Buster's in this world, the jail houses would have a lot of vacancies. He set a shining example of how to live and treat other people. Buster was a good man and will be missed by his family. He was a devoted Christian and said he had read the Bible more than forty times. He never walked in his success and was a grounded, down to earth individual.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Catherine Louise Denney of Mount Pleasant, SC; one daughter, Shirley Ann Powell and her husband, Rick, of Walterboro, SC; two sons, James M. Denney Jr. and his wife, Ann, and John Leland Denney, both of Mount Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Myrtle Lee Eaddy of Moncks Corner, SC and Marie Dye of Mount Pleasant, SC; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
