James Walker Coleman

James Walker Coleman, Jr., 94, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Anne Frizelle Coleman died Wednesday, January 16, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, January 22, 2013 in St. Michael's Church, 71 Broad Street at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in the Churchyard, and a reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.

Walker Coleman was born September 7, 1918 in Charleston, South Carolina to JamesWalker Coleman and Felicia Chisolm Coleman, both of Charleston.

Mr. Coleman attended Charleston primary schools, Porter Military Academy and Woodberry Forest School. He graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee in 1940, having served on the Honor Committee. He was a member of SAE Fraternity (President); PI Gamma Mu; Omicron Delta Kappa (President); Order of Gownsmen (Vice President); "S" Club; Scholarship Society, Neograph; Pan-Hellenic Council, Student Vestry; Blue Key and Red Ribbon Society.

He served as an officer in the US Navy from 1941-1947 and fought in the Pacific Campaign, having served on the USS Chaumont and was captain of two smaller ships, USS SC-1326 and PC(E) 891. He finished his naval career as a Lt. Commander teaching various NROTC courses at the University of South Carolina.

He was a banker in Charleston over 40 years, having worked mostly at First National Bank of SC, where he was Senior Vice President and CEO of the Charleston Office. He was also President and Chairman of Liberty National Bank and Regional SFVP of Southern Bank/BBandT.

He was a life long member of St. Michael's Church where he served as Senior and Junior Warden and was one of the longest serving Trustees.

He was very active in the civic, social and art communities of Charleston serving on the Boards of St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Roper Hospital, Health Science Foundation/MUSC and The Citadel Development Foundation. He was a part of the early organization of Spoleto USA, serving on their Board for many years and was also on the Board of the Gibbes Museum of Art. He served on many other local and charitable Boards and was a former Board member and trustee of Historic Charleston Foundation and the Milby Burton Foundation. He had been an active member of the Carolina Yacht Club, St. Cecilia Society, Huguenot Society, New England Society, St. Andrew's Society, South Carolina Society and Society of Colonial Wars. He also was a highly accomplished cabinetmaker.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Frizelle Coleman, and their two children: Katherine Prioleau Chisolm Coleman, Elizabeth Chisolm Coleman Klosterman; and three sons, James Thomas Coleman, Alexander Chisolm Colman, and Heyward Hamilton Coleman; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Katharine Donald Coleman; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, James Walker Coleman III, and his brother, William Chisolm Coleman.
