James Robert Clifford, 79, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 1, 2025, with his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Daniels Clifford, at his side. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony attended by his immediate family. Arrangements are being handled by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Jim was born on September 2, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was raised by his mother, Mable Maher Clifford, who was a telephone operator for Cleveland Bell. He graduated from Cleveland State University with a business degree and obtained his Master of Business Administration from SMU.
He went on to have a successful business career that included being appointed Vice President and Treasurer of BATUS, Inc., Vice President of Saks Fifth Avenue and Chief Financial Officer for Russ Togs and Gottschalks department stores. He later became President of Sears Canada before retiring as President and Chief Operating Officer of Sears Roebuck and Company.
Jim had many business accomplishments, but what his family will remember the most is all the kids’ sports teams he coached, the family trips and outings, his unassuming manner and all the fun he had with his wonderful friends located throughout the country.
In retirement, Jim loved playing mediocre golf, traveling, watching his beloved Cleveland Browns lose football games and playing poker with his family. His favorite hobby was attending and competing in car shows with his 1960 Chevrolet Impala.
Jim is survived by his high school sweetheart, Mary; son, James R. Clifford Jr. (Julie); son, Ryan Thomas Clifford (Mary); and daughter, Elizabeth DeRosa (Frank). He is also survived by his son-in-law, Quinton Wells; ten grandchildren: Alex, Regan, Lindsay, Frankie, Mary, Catherine, Brianna, Charlotte, Ashton and Colin; and two great- grandchildren: Kamden and Rhyan.
He is predeceased by his parents, brother and daughter, Catherine (Rosie) Clifford Wells.
