James Ralph Barclay, PhD, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Lisa Kurcz Barclay, PhD, entered into eternal rest Thursday, January 3, 2013. His funeral service will be held Friday, January 11, 2013 in Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street at 10:00 a.m. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery.
Dr. Barclay was born May 6, 1926 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, son of Gordon William Barclay and Ruth Christensen Barclay. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Seminary with a degree in philosophy and earned his Masters' and Doctorate from the University of Michigan in education and counseling. He taught at universities in Idaho and California and was for 22 years a professor at the University of Kentucky, retiring in 1992 as a professor emeritus. His illustrious career included authorship of eight books and over 100 articles published in professional journals. He served as editor of the Personnel and Guidance Journal for two terms in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a founding member of the National Association of School Psychologists and a fellow of the American Psychological Association. His former students went on to successful careers at many major universities and he had continued to maintain relationships with them and to provide mentoring when asked.
He was an accomplished musician, playing both the violin and the piano. He was also an avid stamp collector.He was a member of the Center for Creative Retirement at College of Charleston and Grace Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years; daughter, Anne Filler (Larry) of Windham, NH; three sons: Robert Barclay (Deborah) of Fernandina Beach, FL, Gregory Barclay (Sally) of Ames, IA, Christopher Barclay (Alyson) of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren: Christopher, Rachel, and Julia Filler, and Benjamin, Emily, Andrew, Chase, and Polly Barclay; step-grandson, Joshua Reed and sister-in-law, Edith Jayne of New Earswick, Yorkshire, England.
