Jack P. Brickman, 95, passed on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at home in Charleston.
Born and raised in Charleston, Jack attended Courtenay Public School and worked at his father's clothing store on King Street before graduating from High School of Charleston. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science, and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During World War II, Jack proudly served in combat in the Pacific Theater where he participated in the invasion of the Marshall Islands and attained the rank of Captain.
After World War II, Jack returned to Charleston and in 1946, married his childhood sweetheart, Fay Cohen. He then attended University of Virginia Law School and graduated in 1949, where he was chosen to be in the Scholastic Honor Society's Order of the Coif and served as a distinguished member of the Law Review.
Jack was an attorney at law for more than 65 years, maintaining his practice on Broad Street, where he was known to never turn anyone away who needed legal help, often accepting payment in vegetables or whatever else the client could provide. He was also engaged in local real estate development as well as many other business ventures.
"What can I do for you?" was a frequent refrain of Jack's and he was always offering his help to friends and strangers alike. Jack was friendly, generous and always impeccably dressed.
In addition to his active law practice, Jack served as president of many local organizations including the Jewish Community Center of Charleston, the Charleston Jewish Federation, his beloved Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue, the South Carolina Association of B'nai Brith Lodges and even the Rivers High School PTA. Jack was also an active member of the Charleston County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Hebrew Benevolent Society and the Hebrew Orphan Society.
Giving back to the community was of paramount importance to Jack as evidenced by the countless local charities he supported up until his passing. In 2005, then Mayor Joe P. Riley issued a proclamation naming August 21, 2005 as "Jack and Fay Brickman Day" as part of "The Crown of the Good Name" honoring his decades of devotion to the Charleston community.
Jack is survived by his wife of 70 years, Fay Cohen Brickman, as well as his six children who are all also attorneys: Steven Alan Brickman (Lenora Pate) of Birmingham; Barbara Brickman Stein (Sheldon Stein) of Dallas; Michael Joseph Brickman (Tippy Stern Brickman) of Charleston; David Reuben Brickman (Nancy Brickman) of Dallas; Lowell Kapler Brickman (Jeanette Brickman) of Austin, TX; and Luba Brickman Seidman (Steven Seidman) of Chappaqua, NY. Jack was "Papa Jack" to his 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by his sister Rita Brickman Kurtz (Arthur Kurtz), as well as extended family in France and Israel.
Fay and the entire Brickman family are thankful for the outpouring of support and ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Jack's honor to BSBI Synagogue, 182 Rutledge Avenue Charleston, South Carolina 29403, or the Low Country Food Bank, 2864 Azalea Dr. North Charleston, SC 29405.
