J. Reid Anderegg

February 6, 1956 — January 19, 2018

J. Reid Anderegg passed away at home on Friday, January 19, 2018, after an outpouring of love from friends and family including a week of visitors sharing a lifetime of memories. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 1 to 3 PM at J. Henry Stuhr's Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Reid was born in Charleston on February 6, 1956. He was the son of the late James Reid "Chippy" Anderegg, Sr. and the late June Williams Anderegg. He was raised on Sullivan's Island among the other hard-working middle class families, many of whom were employed by the Naval Shipyard. He spent much of his 1960s childhood helping his father tend to the family business - the island's only gas station and taproom. He attended public schools on Sullivan's Island and Moultrie High School in Mt. Pleasant. Reid spent his late teens, twenties and early thirties working as a shrimper, a volunteer Sullivan's Island firefighter, and a technician for Amoco Chemical. In his late twenties, Reid began moonlighting as a political organizer - eventually enrolling as a political science student at the College of Charleston. Upon graduating from the College, he enrolled at the University of South Carolina School of Law, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar at the age of 40. He served the public as Commissioner with the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission.

Never forgetting his roots, Reid was passionate in his political and legal advocacy for working families and their challenges. Much of his motivation to enter the legal profession at age 40 was his desire to help the kinds of people he grew up and worked with. Reid also kept a soft spot in his heart for young people and served as a mentor to many. He loved music and live concerts, from The Allman Brothers Band to Arcade Fire, and enjoyed traveling to music festivals such as Bonnaroo and Rock Werchter with his friend Julian Buckner.

Left to cherish his memory are Lynn Clark, his wife of 17 years, his sister Sylvia Reid Anderegg, his stepchildren Emily and Kyle, his in-laws Virginia and James Frazee, and his close cousins Joe Crouse and Wayne Stelljes. Reid was predeceased by his nephew Patrick G. Flynn. He will also be missed by a large circle of friends whom he considered family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Reid's name to Partners in Health at pih.org, or to Jump Little Children PledgeMusic at pledgemusic.com/jump-little-children.
