J. Douglas Jenkins, III

J. Douglas Jenkins III, age 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep the morning of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at his home in Rockville, South Carolina.

The son of a U.S. foreign service officer, Doug lived in several exotic locations in his youth, and excelled academically. His unique sense of humor and independent spirit were apparent from an early age, with resulting stories of hijinks and minor adventures which he was fond of sharing. His intellect shone through during his college studies where he graduated with honors from a top university earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering, while also meeting a beautiful co-ed graduate student who quickly became the love of his life, Roberta (Bee), from New Hampshire. They were married after graduation, and a tour in the Army in Germany, Doug's completion of a Ph.D. in engineering, and an expanding family followed.

Doug’s quest for the perfect occupation and a desire to relocate ever closer to the village of Rockville, his favorite spot ever since he was a child, resulted in a number of career changes and moves during his eventful life. He worked in scientific research, academia, the public and private sectors, as an independent contractor, and served as the first Mayor of Rockville after he and Bee led the effort to incorporate the town.

Doug spent untold hours with his children from the time they were young, assisting them with studies, playing games, and helping them to learn and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, and exploring beaches and marshes, instilling in them a deep appreciation for the ocean and some of his dry wit and analytical wisdom as well. He and Bee were married for nearly 65 years, sharing the joys of raising a family, woodworking, dogs, gardening, home renovation, and a lifetime of other activities, side-by-side, in partnership and love.

Doug is survived by Bee, his four children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A small, private celebration of Doug's life will be held at a later date.
