Rev. J. David Stewart, 94, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Helen Warsaw Stewart died Wednesday, April 5, 2017. His Funeral Service will be held Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the East Cooper Baptist Church, 361 Egypt Road at 2:00 p.m. Interment, Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd.
David was born May 17, 1922 in Six Mile, SC to the late Taylor Hillhouse Stewart and the late Sunie Medlin Stewart. He grew up in Abbeville, SC. David served in active combat in the US Army during WWII in Europe. He then married his wife of 64 years, Ruby Gillespie Stewart, and worked in human resources in the textile industry. David was called to ministry and graduated from Erskine College in 1964. He served many churches over the years from Ware Shoals, SC to Wilmington, NC. After retirement, he and his family moved to Mount Pleasant, SC and mourned his wife Ruby's death in 2010. In 2012, 90 year old David drove up on a Boss Hoss motorcycle with his second love, Helen, for their wedding.
In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by his two sons, David Loy Stewart (the late Judy Detyens) and John Gregg Stewart (Sylvia); four grandchildren, Loy, Jason, Jonathon, and Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Oveline King, Avanelle McCord, and Betty Woolbright.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby, as well as eight of his siblings.
