Isabel Lockard

June 27, 1915 — November 5, 2011

Entered into eternal rest on the morning of November 5, 2011, B. Isabel Lockard, Ph.D., resident of Charleston, SC. Dr. Lockard was born June 27, 1915 in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, daughter of American parents, Claude Wesley Lockard and Ethel Parker Lockard.

Due to her father's position as President of International Harvester Company, Canada, the family moved to Chicago, IL in 1934. In 1938, she received a BS degree in Speech from Northwestern University. After working in speech pathology for three years, she then continued her studies and received a Master's degree in Speech Correction from the University of Michigan. In 1942, she then became a graduate student under Dr. Elizabeth Crosby, considered at that time to be the world's foremost neuroanatomist. Dr. Lockard received her Ph.D. in 1946 from the University of Michigan. She taught at Georgetown University from 1947 until she was recruited to come to MUSC by Dr. Melvin Knisely in 1952. She taught medical and graduate students, neurology residents and dental students during her career at MUSC. She also published the DESK REFERENCE FOR NEUROSCIENCE which is used by neuroscientists worldwide.

Dr. Lockard retired from MUSC in 1985 when she was 70 and was named Professor Emeritus at that time. MUSC awarded her the Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 1999.

She is survived by her brother, Frank Lockard, and his wife, Carol; two nephews, Alan and Paul Lockard; two nieces, Judith Yoreo (Bill) and Kathy Stedman (Jim); three grandnieces, two great-grandnieces and one great grandnephew.
