Isaac David Smith

Isaac D. Smith, Jr., 82, of Charleston, SC, husband of JoAnn Stokes-Smith, entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 6, 2012. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, October 10, 2012, in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd., at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.

Isaac was born September 29, 1930, in Petersburg, WV, son of the late Isaac David Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Groce Smith. A 1960 Citadel Graduate with a degree in Civil Engineering, he worked as a Civil Engineer with Soil Consultants. His honesty and attention to detail led him to help sponsor the Civil Engineering Club at The Citadel and he studied and earned his Professional Engineer's license. He served on the Charleston County Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals and worked for Wilbur Smith Associates as the project engineer for the James Island Bridge. "I.D." served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.

"I.D." followed his life-long enthusiasm for toy trains and was the owner and operator of Palmetto Trains-Toy Train Repairs. I. D. was a perfectionist and mastered the Lionel Service Station manual in the late 1980s. He was a contributor to Greenberg's Repair and Operating Manual for Lionel Trains book, authored by Greenberg, condensing what were previously hundreds of disorganized service manuals into a single detailed coherent source. He served many years as an officer of the National Railway Historical Society, Charleston Chapter.

He is survived by his wife of twenty years, JoAnn Stokes-Smith of Charleston, SC; two sons, Isaac "David" Smith III, of Concord, NC, and Michael Wayne Smith (Alice) of Hartsville, SC; a daughter, Elizabeth S. Warfel (Michael Warfel) of Charlotte, NC; two stepsons, Donald Stokes Kilpatrick (Carol) of James Island, SC, and William James Kilpatrick (Sarah) of Fleming Island, FL; five grandchildren, Joy Smith, Jon Smith, Joshua Smith, Harper Smith, and Jacob Smith; five step-grandchildren, Brittany Kilpatrick, Christopher Kilpatrick, Austin Kilpatrick, Emily Ruth, and Ashley Ruth Strange; as well as many nieces and nephews in the West Virginia area. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Jane Geary of West Virginia.
