Irving L. Greenberg, 80, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Thursday, November 16, 2023. His Graveside Service will be held Monday December the 11th, in the Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road at 1:00pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
Irving was born September 1, 1943 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Jacob Benjamin Greenberg and Norma Krauss. Irving joined the Navy after high school, serving on the USS Saratoga. He traveled in missions all over the world on the flagship for the Sixth Fleet including leading the battle group in the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1963, Irving came back to South Carolina to attend barber school in Columbia. He then apprenticed at Bunch's Barber Shop in downtown Charleston before working for 12 years at his barber shop at the Charleston Inn on Lockwood Drive. He had been a barber for over 60 years including barbering at Oskar's Family Barber Shop since 1986. During those years Irving also became an avid inshore and offshore deep sea fisherman, attended Power Squadron School, and co-owned fishing boats with his brother David Greenberg. Irving was an expert sport fisherman, catching big game fish out of Charleston and also traveling to the Bahamas, Venezuela, and Ecuador to deep sea fish. In his later years he loved to fish often in the surf of the Isle of Palms beach.
He is survived by brothers, Carl S Greenberg, Alan M Greenberg; nephews, Jack Greenberg, Michael Greenberg, Aaron Greenberg, Paul Greenberg and their families.
He was preceded in death by father, Jacob Benjamin Greenberg; mother, Norma Greenberg; brother, David W Greenberg.
