Irma Bond Terhune Snowden

June 11, 1919 — June 29, 2010

Irma Bond Terhune Snowden, 91, died peacefully on June 29, 2010 in North Charleston, SC.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lawrence Keith Snowden.


Born on June 11, 1919 in Midland Park, NJ, Irma graduated from Pompton Lakes High School then re-joined her family, who had moved to Virginia.  She worked for the Division of Motor Vehicles in Richmond and later The Bank of Westmoreland in Colonial Beach and The Northern Neck State Bank in Warsaw.  During World War II, Irma worked for the Command Center out of Richmond as part of an observer team, identifying and plotting aircraft along the Potomac River.  In their retirement, she and her husband volunteered with "Meals on Wheels" and for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.


Together, they also supported the Carolina Youth Development Program.  Irma was recognized for her work for Lutheran Social Services of Greater Charleston, now the Tricounty Family Ministries.  She was formally honored for her many years involvement with "My Sister's House".  Irma was a faithful and very active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church since 1981.  She was given the Eleanor Haskins Award for her outreach service through the Episcopal Church.  She was a devoted member of The Daughters of the King and on the St. Thomas prayer team.


She is survived by two daughters, Bond Koteas and her husband George, of Connecticut and Jan Snowden of Goose Creek; one grandson, Chris, of Connecticut; her sister-in-law, Ann Bailey Terhune; several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by a beloved sister, Jean Terhune Marshall and a beloved brother, Lester Stansfield Terhune, Jr.    


A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 East Montague Avenue, North Charleston, SC  29405.  A reception will be held in the parish hall immediately following the service.  Burial will be private. 


In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
