Iris Eleanor Shelton Salisbury, 87, wife of Edwin H. Salisbury of North Charleston, died Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Hospice of Charleston.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of North Charleston on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at 2 pm. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, between 4 pm and 7 pm.
Mrs. Salisbury was born January 1, 1925 in Chatham, Virginia. She was one of nine children of Samuel Ferguson Shelton and Annie Yeatts Shelton. She was a member of First Baptist Church of North Charleston, where she taught Sunday School for 60 years. She was a certified master tutor working with the National Literacy Program. In 1989, Mrs. Salisbury was awarded the Hall of Fame Award for 25 years of volunteer service. In 2005, she was named Woman of the Year by the Charleston Federation of Women's Clubs. She was an active member of the Gideon Auxiliary and the North Charleston Exchange Club Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Edwin H. Salisbury, Sr.; three sons, Edwin H. Salisbury, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Aiea, Hawaii, Thomas Salisbury and his wife, Terry, of Bradenton, Florida and Allen Salisbury of North Charleston, South Carolina; a sister, Katherine Rigney of North Charleston, South Carolina; two brothers, Stewart Shelton of Chatham, Virginia and Francis Shelton of Powhatan, Virginia; four grandchildren, Troy Salisbury and his wife Jennifer, Chris Salisbury and his wife Kristen, Jason Salisbury and Brian Salisbury; and two great-granddaughters, Caroline Iris Salisbury and Annabeth Michelle Salisbury.
Mrs. Salisbury was preceded in death by three sisters, Essie Luster of Lynchburg, Virginia, Ollie Jackson of North Charleston, South Carolina and Osie Keely of Plant City, Florida; and two brothers, Melvin Shelton of Ravenel, South Carolina and Edward Shelton of Newport News, Virginia.
