Irene Goldman Taradash

Irene Goldman Taradash of Charleston, South Carolina, died January 10, 2026 at the age of 89. She was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, and sister and will be missed by family, friends, and neighbors.

She will be interred next to her parents in the Brith Sholom Beth Israel Sycamore Cemetery in West Ashley on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at noon.

Irene was born in Charleston on October 6, 1936 to Max and Clara (Schwartz) Goldman. She graduated from Rivers High School in 1954 and the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1958. She made many lifelong friends during her high school and college years and was a member of the Rivers High Class of ’54 “Lunch Bunch” that met regularly at restaurants around Charleston. As a young adult, Irene was a trained lifeguard and swim instructor who spent her summers teaching at camps in upstate South Carolina and New York. She was active in dance, theater, swimming and diving.

Irene was a proud, life-long member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue in Charleston, South Carolina. She was also a member of Hadassah, the BSBI Sisterhood and volunteered at the Jewish Community Center and the BSBI Minyan House in South Windermere.

Irene was a strong single mother who, after a difficult divorce, brought her children home to live with her parents in Charleston. She often said that bringing her children to Charleston and having them living with their grandparents, was the best decision of her life. When she returned to Charleston, she worked for the State of South Carolina Department of Developmental Disabilities. First, as a teacher at the Coastal Center in Ladson and then as a Group Home Coordinator, traveling throughout the state. She was active in Boy Scouting with her two boys and served as the Committee Chairman of Troop 22 for 6 years. An amateur historian of early cultures, she had wonderful memories of her travels to Israel and Turkey.

In late 2024, she relocated to live with her son, Greg, and his wife Julie, who tended to her needs in her final years.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents Max and Clara (Schwartz) Goldman and her brother Eugene Goldman. She is survived by her three children: Doreen (Dave) Frederick (Rachel and Leah), Bob Taradash (Kerrie Golden) (Aubrey, Levi, Averi and Lucas), and Greg (Julie) Taradash (Erin and Mia). She is also survived by her brother Lenny Goldman, sister-in-law Jan Goldman and sister-in-law Lucy Behar Goldman.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in her name to benefit patients dealing with leukemia and cancer.

Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
