Idona Mehring Teeter, 89, a resident of Franke at Seaside, died Monday, July 11 in Mt. Pleasant of natural causes. A retired registered nurse and school social worker for the Gettysburg, PA school district, Mrs. Teeter was the mother of Angela Jones of Summerville and Cindy Teeter of Mt. Pleasant.
A long-time resident of Gettysburg, PA, Mrs. Teeter was born on Nov. 26, 1921 in Taneytown, MD to the late Harold S. Mehring and Ethel Hively Mehring. She was a 1943 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, and also earning a bachelor's degree in 1945 from Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD. To support the war effort, she served as a nurse at the Western Electric munitions plant in Dundalk, MD. She later worked as a private duty nurse at both the Miami and Chicago estates of famous polio survivor, Fred Snite, nationally known at the time as "The Man in the Iron Lung." In a mid-life career change she joined the Gettysburg Area School District in 1965 and worked for 22 years as the district's home and school visitor, focusing on helping at-risk students stay in school. As a social worker liaison, she provided direct outreach between parents and principals, making thousands of home visits, offering a calm voice in many tense school-home situations. She retired in 1987, having impacted the lives of countless young people. Known for her keen sense of humor and interest in people, Mrs. Teeter was also a passionate bridge player, avid homemaker, and a needlecraft artisan and professional painter, who won several "best of show" ribbons for her needlework and paintings at local fairgrounds. Upon her move to Franke at Seaside in 2005 she was instrumental in encouraging the start of art classes for all residents, a key component of Franke's active lifestyle community today.
Mrs. Teeter's husband, William H. Teeter, of Gettysburg, PA died in 1980. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Richard Mehring of Keymar, MD. Survivors include four children, Angela Jones and husband Bucky, of Summerville, SC, Andrew Teeter and wife Margo of Charleston, WV, Cindy Teeter and husband Joe Gallagher of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Holly Shannon and husband Paul of McLean, VA, sister Wanda Mehring Mann of Frisco, TX, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Franke's Rodenberg Chapel on Saturday, July 23 at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Franke at Seaside for the "Subsidized Care Fund," 1885 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, S.C. 29464.
