Hulda J. Wohltmann, M.D. 90, of Isle of Palms, SC, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 11, 2014. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 16, 2014 in All Saints Lutheran Church at 10:00 am, followed by Interment in Bethany Cemetery, Charleston. The family will receive friends in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Dr. Wohltmann was born April 10, 1923 in Charleston, SC, daughter of the late John Diedrich Wohltmann and Emma Mohrmann Wohltmann. She was a graduate of The College of Charleston and The Medical College of South Carolina. She served at the St. Louis Children's Hospital from 1950 until 1965, returning to serve at The Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Wohltmann was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, and was a recognized, renowned physician, responsible for significant contributions in diabetes research in pediatric medicine. She was published in numerous medical journals, and was a member of many professional organizations. Dr. Wohltmann was the recipient of the Professional Service Award, 1977, SC Diabetes Association; Life Membership Award, 1981, SC Diabetes Association, and Special Award for Outstanding and Continuous Dedicated Service to SC Children with Diabetes, 1989, SC Diabetes Association. Dr. Wohltmann is listed in Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in America, and Best Doctors in the US, 1981. A life-long Lutheran, Hulda was an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church, where she was a long-time participant in the Thursday Morning Bible Study. She was also a member of the Board of Directors, Franke at Seaside, 1977-1997; member of the Advisory Board, Center for Ethical Development, Newberry College; and the Board of Trustees, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, SC, 1991-1997.
She is survived by her sister, Lucille Hightower and her husband Bill of Mount Pleasant, SC; her nephews, H. Legare Coleman, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Mount Pleasant, SC; Richard Hightower and his wife Deborah of Hartsville, SC; Dr. Lee Wells and his wife Mary of Chestnut Hill, MA; and John Wells and his wife Marie of Baltimore, MD; her nieces, Barbara C. Cullen of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Elizabeth S. Coleman of New Hope, PA; Elizabeth H. McMillan and her husband Ken of Mabelton, GA; Anne H. White and her husband Ron of Leesville, SC; Lucia W. Foley and her husband Bill of S. Hadley, MA; and Diane Wells and her husband Gary Schneider of Billerica, MA. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Elsa W. Coleman and Mildred W. Wells.
