Lt. Col. Hugh Middleton Rutledge USA (Ret), 98, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Elizabeth Norman Rutledge died Monday, January 21, 2013. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 27, 2013 in the J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 pm with visitation one hour prior to service. Interment at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
Hugh was born January 23, 1914 in Sumter, South Carolina, son of the late Thomas Pinckney Rutledge and the late Ethel Gary Parrott. He was a graduate of the Presbyterian College. Hugh was a Veteran of WW II and Korea serving in the Army, where he retired as a Lt. Colonel. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Fort Eustis Officers Club, Retired Military Police Officers Association, and the Kiwanis International. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Norman Rutledge of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Diane Rutledge of Charleston, SC, and Rosamond Rutledge-Burns of Harpers Ferry, WV; a son, Thomas Rutledge of Charleston, SC; a grandson, Robert McGlaun (Dawn) of Charleston, SC; and two granddaughters, Meredith Middleton Rutledge, and Amelia Kennen Rutledge both of Charleston, SC.
