Hugh Legare Missroon, Sr., 92, husband of the late, Gladys Missroon of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014 at MUSC Hospital in Charleston. Private services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road.
Hugh was born on August 9, 1921 in Bucksport, South Carolina to the late James Missroon and the late Amanda Elizabeth Dix Missroon. He was a World War II veteran, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge, for which he received a Purple Heart. A true artisan, he served the shrimping community from North Carolina to Florida with his net making abilities for many years. He could be found repairing nets on shrimp boats even in his eighties. "A Maritime Heritage" called him "a net-maker extraordinaire". Hugh loved gardening and his animals, horses, dogs, cats, birds and any other creature that came his way. But most of all, Hugh loved his family.
He is survived by one son, Bill Missroon of Lumber Bridge, NC; three daughters, Barbara (Carl) Dear of James Island, SC, Amanda Villeponteaux and Kerri Garner, both of Mount Pleasant, SC; granddaughters, Margaret Dear, Carla DuPree, Kellie Ziegler, Megan Garner, Hillary Van Orsdel, Shana Missroon, and Alyssa Missroon; grandsons, Richard Villeponteaux, Matthew Villeponteaux, Jordan Villeponteaux, and Zachary Garner; great grandchildren, Taylor DuPree, Samantha DuPree, Blake Dandrige, Ben Missroon, and Victoria Missroon. He is also survived by many loving and caring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Frampton, Danny, Leon, and Charlie; and sisters, Anna and Elizabeth (Bett) and his son, Hugh L. Missroon, Jr. (Dinker).
A very special thanks to Gary Smith for his love and devoted care of Hugh over the last five years.
