SMSgt. Howard Daniel Whiting, USAF Ret., 83, of North Charleston, SC, husband of Sylvia Anderson Whiting for 63 1/2 years died Monday, March 18, 2013. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 22, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Charleston Calvary Church of the Nazarene, 541 Redbank Road, Goose Creek, SC 29445. Interment with military honors will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, Thursday from 6:00-8:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road.
Mr. Whiting was born July 1, 1929, in Auburn, ME, one of six children of the late Howard Francis Whiting and the late Katherine Hetzel Whiting. As a flight engineer in the US Air Force, he served 26 years until his retirement in 1977. He continued his aerospace career as an inspector with Lockheed Martin and retired in 1991. He was a member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Goose Creek, SC.Howard was a devoted family man whose great joy in life was to be present at family gatherings. He was also a man of faith which prompted his service at home and on a special work and witness trip to Papua, N.G. Howard served in Japan and Vietnam along with a number of stations in the United States. His last ten years were spent at Charleston Air Force Base in his role as flight engineer that took him all over the world.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Sylvia A.Whiting of North Charleston, SC; daughters, Dr. Judith Whiting of Columbia, SC and Dr. Brenda Wagner of Marietta, GA; sons, Steven D. Whiting of Camden, TN and Brian Whiting of Summerville, SC; brother, George Henry Whiting; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Four sisters preceded him in death: Katherine Miller, Gertrude Perkins, Thelma Woodward and Iris Hall.
