Howard Earl Snyder

September 27, 1949 — June 30, 2017

Dr. Howard Earl Snyder, 67, of Charleston, SC, husband of Mary Anne Snyder, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, June 30, 2017. Dr. Snyder was born on September 27, 1949 in Charleston, the son of Mrs. Sara Snyder and the late Dr. Gilbert Snyder.

Dr. Snyder is a third generation Charlestonian who graduated from Charleston's The Gaud School for Boys in 1967 and subsequently attended college at Emory University where he finished in three years in 1970 and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Upsilon Honorary Society. He was awarded a Navy Dental Scholarship and accepted at The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where he received his DDS in 1974. Dr. Snyder served on Active Duty in San Diego at the end of The Vietnam War during which time he cared for many naval and marine personnel before they were sent overseas. He then entered the Naval Reserve where he served on a Nuclear Submarine Tender at the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston for six years as a Naval Reserve Officer.

Dr. Snyder practiced general dentistry for 40 years in the Downtown Charleston Medical University Area and was a member of the American Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association, and the Coastal District Dental Society. Throughout his career, Dr. Snyder was always most interested in providing care for all of his patients in a comfortable environment during which time he could become familiar with their families and life stories. His wisdom and knowledge were paramount to all who knew him.

He was most passionate about his family, spending time with his wife, daughters, their husbands and his grandchildren who affectionately knew him as "H." Throughout his life, he could often be found on the racquetball courts at the MUSC Wellness Center, on his boat navigating the rivers on which he was raised, and voraciously reading whenever possible. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with their many close friends and family, all of whom will remember him for his acumen and intellect.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Anne Snyder; and his children, Jenna Snyder Skaff (Richard) of Davidson, NC, Nessa Snyder Warley (Caldwell) of Charleston, SC ; grandchildren: Richard Joseph Skaff III (Treyton) and Edward Simmerman Skaff (Sims) of Davidson, NC, John Caldwell Warley IV (Wells) and Addington Eliza Warley (Addie) of Charleston, SC; Mother, Sara Friedman Snyder, of Charleston, SC; siblings, Gary Snyder (Pam) of Charleston, SC, Denice Leebow (Kenneth) of Atlanta, GA as well as many nieces and nephews.
