Herbert Wilcox

November 24, 1929 — September 3, 2011

Entered into eternal rest on the morning of Saturday, September 3, 2011, Herbert "Herbie" Wilcox, husband of Joan Dixon Wilcox. Residence, Mt. Pleasant, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert "Herbie" Wilcox are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Matthews Lutheran Church. Interment, Bethany Cemetery.  Friends may call at The Citadel Alumni House Renken Hall on Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC.


                       


Herbie was born on November 24, 1929 in Charleston, SC, the son of J. Edward Wilcox, Sr., and Nissie Culclasure Wilcox.  Herbie attended the High School of Charleston and graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1951.  While at The Citadel he was on the wrestling team and boxing team.  Herbie served as President of the Association of Citadel Men, President of the Brigadier Club, President of the German Friendly Society, President of the Exchange Club of Charleston, and President of St. Matthew Lutheran Church Council.  He was very active in St. Matthews Church, serving in many capacities.  He was a life member of the Mariner Lodge #2, life member of the Elks Club of Charleston, a member of the Washington Light Infantry and Emeritus member of the Salvation Army Board of Directors.  Herbie served on the Moultrie Constituent School District Board for two years, Mt. Pleasant Town Council for 8 years, and Mt. Pleasant Water Works for 12 years.  Herbie retired as a Vice President of Roper Hospital after 22 years.  He served 22 years of active and reserve duty in the US Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.  On October 27, 1956 he married his love, Joan H. Dixon.   



 

He is survived by his wife, Joan; his daughter Tamara W. (Richard) Spelman; son, Herbert Dixon Wilcox; granddaughters: Elizabeth Claire Spelman and Caroline Wilcox Spelman; and stepbrother: Louis Costa.  He was preceded by his parents and siblings, J.E. Wilcox, Jr., John D. Wilcox, Elizabeth W. Small, Albert Wilcox (Albie), and Jamie E. Wilcox and stepbrother: Mars Costa.
