It is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to our beloved father, Herbert F. Schwarz, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who departed from this world suddenly and quickly on May 11, 2024, at the age of 93. His life was happy, healthy, productive, and long, with no regrets.
Herb, as he was known to his friends and family, was born to Alois and Henrietta Schwarz, on November 24, 1930, in Vienna Austria. Herb and his parents immigrated to the United States in 1939. Herb went on to graduate from the University of Colorado with a degree in biology and from the University of Colorado’s Medical School with a doctor of medicine.
He met his wife, Gladys Schwarz (née Zeller), while attending medical school, and they were happily married for over 61 years. Together, they built a beautiful life, eventually settling in Wayne, NJ, and raised three children, Paul, Debbie and Nancy. Herb adored his grandchildren, Hannah, Josh, Alex, Jared, Amanda, Ben, Bradley and Rebecca, and took great pride and joy in watching them grow and thrive. Herb also took great pride and joy meeting, holding, and playing with his great grandchildren, Jeremy, Evie, Colin, and Hayley. Herb practiced surgery for 44 years from 1957 to 2001 and was a Board Certified General Surgeon in private surgical practices that spanned 37 years from 1964 to 2001.
Herb was on the staff at various Hospitals during his career including Newton Hospital in Newton, NJ, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson NJ, Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains, NJ, and Wayne General Hospital, in Wayne, NJ. Herb was a huge sports fan of his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and University of Colorado football team. He loved spending time with friends, playing bridge, playing the stock market, telling jokes and being with his family.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents Alois and Henrietta and his wife Gladys.
Herb is survived by his son, Paul Schwarz and his wife Irene, his daughter Debbie Gleit and her husband Randy, his daughter Nancy Caplan and her husband John Gartner, his grandchildren Hannah Whiteside, Josh Plaxen and his wife Allyson Plaxen, Alex Plaxen, Jared Schwarz and his wife Deanna Schwarz, Amanda Schwarz, Ben Caplan, Bradley Plaxen and Rebecca Caplan and his great grandchildren Jeremy Whiteside, Evie Whiteside, Colin Whiteside, and Hayley Plaxen, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
