Entered into eternal rest on the morning of June 20, 2010, Herbert Vance Long, widower of Inez Hendon Long. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Herbert V. Long are invited to attend his funeral services Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Pinecrest Baptist Church at Ten O'clock. Entombment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, (3360 Glenn McConnel Parkway) from six until eight o'clock.
Mr. Long was born on November 15, 1920, in Furman, South Carolina, son of the late Richard E. Long and Lessie Amanda Smith Long. A graduate of Cordova High school, he studied accounting at the Citadel in 1947. His career began as a courier at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and he retired after thirty-six years of service, as the Director of Management Engineering. Since retirement he continued to work in the Accounting and Tax Preparation field until 2007. Active in the Southern Baptist Churches of Charleston Association, his service there began in the Citadel Square Baptist Church where he and his late wife, Inez Herndon, were married in 1942. He was a charter member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, established in 1957. He served in many capacities within the church including Sunday School teacher, Chairman of Deacons and chaired and participated in many committee activities during this period. Mr. Long was a past President and active member of the National Association of Retired and Active Federal Employees. (NARFE) Chapter 1013.
He is survived by three daughters; Brenda Williamson (Hance) of Augusta, GA, Donna Camacho (Domingo) of Savannah, GA, and Sandra Bessent of Charleston, SC; seven grandchildren: Angela Osborne, Brendan Williamson, Jamie Bessent, Ana Camacho, Carey Williamson, Laine Holmes, Curtis Williamson and six great- grandchildren.
