Entered into eternal rest on July 1, 2014, Herbert A. Engel, husband of Evelyn Waldrop Engel.
His graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2014 in Emanu-El Cemetery "Maryville" at 5:00 p.m. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. The family will be sitting Shiva at 358 Confederate Circle, the home of Debra Engel and Newton Klements on Wednesday after the service until 8:30 p.m., Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. with a Minyan Service at 6:15 p.m., Friday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Engel was born February 28, 1922 in Charleston, SC, the son of Max Engel and Bessie Bebergal Engel. He received his undergraduate degree from Clemson University. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. After college, Mr. Engel began working on King Street for his uncle, Moses Bebergal at Abraham's Furniture Store. Mr. Engel owned and operated Engel Brother's Furniture from September 1969 until October 1995 along with his brother, Louis B. Engel. Mr. Engel was a member of various community groups, including the Elks, Hebrew Orphan Society of Charleston, Jewish War Veterans, Synagogue Emanu-El and the Jewish Community Center. Mr. Engel is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Waldrop Engel of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Debbie Engel (Newton Klements) of Charleston, SC and Carla Engel-Cook (Steve) of Marietta, GA; two grandchildren, Henley and Jake Cook. He is also survived by close cousin, Joe Engel and his close friend, Louis Wilson.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, who have been with him for many years, Gwen King, Edna Frazier, Martha Williams and Samantha Kelly.
