Herbert Alexander Niemyer, Jr. (Bert), 85, of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away on October 16, 2026 surrounded by family and caregivers.

Born in Conway, SC on September 9, 1941, he spent his youth in Murells Inlet, SC, where his family owned and operated The Cedar Grill and Marina, as well as in the Florida Keys. He graduated from The Citadel with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a proud member of the Class of 1963 and C Company.

A licensed professional engineer and land surveyor, Bert initially worked for the South Carolina Highway Department and Charleston County Public Works. In 1971, he established his own business where he built a successful career and helped guide and mentor many young surveyors and engineers along the way.

Bert was an avid fisherman with a deep interest in and extensive knowledge of coastal and marine life. As an adult, he discovered a love for tennis and greatly enjoyed the sport. He also pursued photography and became a member of the Charleston Artist Guild.

He faithfully attended the Church of the Holy Cross on Sullivan's Island, SC, with his family. He will be remembered for his warm smile, friendly nature, adventurous spirit, and genuine care and compassion for people and animals

He is survived by his beloved wife of 6l years, Merrinell Morris Niemyer, his daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Niemyer Donnelly (John) and Elizabeth Niemyer Maynor (Clay); his grandchildren, Laurel Drake Maynor, Alexander John Donnelly, and Katherine Merritt Donnelly: his sister, Sallie Pasquinelli (Bruno), and his nieces and nephews, John, Tina, Betsy, Bruno, Tamara, Patricia, Merritt, and Sydney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Alexander Niemyer, Sr. (Herb) and Alberta Lohr Niemyer (Bede)

The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Agape Hospice. We are also grateful for the compassionate care provided by Sarah Burroughs, Ju'Lisa Cotten, and Latasha Peppers.
