Henry Critchfield Hutson, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Harriet Lowndes Rhett Maybank Hutson entered into eternal rest Sunday, July 14, 2013. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2013 in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street at 3:00 p.m. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry was born May 27, 1927 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of William Elliott Hutson and Katherine Critchfield Hutson. At seventeen he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served until the end of WWII. Henry attended The Citadel as a Veteran student for one year before entering the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, where he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor's Degree. He then attended law school at the University of South Carolina before he was recalled to active duty in the Korean War from 1953- 1956, serving in naval intelligence in Washington DC before being deployed to Korea. He retired from the Marine Corps reserves as a Major after twenty years of service. Henry was a school administrator, teacher, coach and former headmaster at Christ School, Arden, North Carolina, Sewanee Academy, Sewanee, Tennessee, East Cooper School, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. While at Christ School, he earned his Master's Degree in Education at Western Carolina University. Henry also served as the Secretary to the Board at The College of Charleston. He was a lifelong member of St. Philip's Church and served on the Vestry, past Commodore and member, Carolina Yacht Club, member, Society of The Cincinnati, Colonial Wars, Agricultural Society, member and past president, St. George's Society, Huguenot Society, Charleston Club, member of the National Historic Railway Museum, Charleston Chapter, Royal Rhododendron Brigade of Guards in Asheville, NC and St. Cecilia Society. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of The University of the South, board member of Christ School, Charleston Day School and Advisory Board, St. Andrew's - Sewanee.
He is survived by his wife of almost 53 years, Harriet, his daughter, Mary Pope Maybank Hutson of Arlington, VA and his son, William Elliott Hutson, II, and his wife, Bonnie Stevenson Hutson of Charleston SC. He is predeceased by his brothers; William Elliott Hutson, Jr. and Richard Woodward Hutson and a sister, Louise Hutson Dodds.
