Henry Hargett (Harry) Coombs, Jr, 87, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 15, 2024.
Harry was born July 16, 1937 in Charleston, the son of Helen Whaley Simons Coombs and Henry Hargett Coombs. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine Wehman Coombs; his son, Henry Hargett (Hank) Coombs, III (Katherine); his daughter, Catherine Coombs Tallman (William), and his sister, Martha Coker (Stephen). He was preceded in death by his sister, Rhett Coombs Smith.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Mason Coombs McGoogan (Alex), Henry Hargett Coombs, IV, Catherine Leighton Cuthbert, and Robert Barnwell Cuthbert; and great grandson, Henry Duncan McGoogan. He loved his family dearly and was happiest when with them.
After serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to his beloved Charleston to raise his family. His roots run deep in his family's loyalty to Charleston, with his great grandfather, Robert Goodwyn Rhett as mayor.
He enjoyed golfing, hunting, woodworking and nature. Upon retirement, he became a voracious reader.
Harry was a member of Grace Church Cathedral, past member of the Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston Yacht Club, Arion Society and the German Friendly Society.
A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, November 21, 2024, in Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, at 10:00 am, followed by inurnment in the Grace Church Columbarium.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC 29401-1473. Flowers will also be accepted.
